Montelukast sodium is a leukotriene receptor antagonist used in the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, which are substances in the body that cause inflammation and allergic reactions. The medication comes in the form of oral tablets.

• Asthma
• Allergic Rhinitis

The following dosage can be followed:

• Asthma- Montelukast is typically prescribed as 10 mg once daily for adults and adolescents (15 years and older), to be taken in the evening. For children aged 6-14 years, the usual dose is 5 mg once daily in the evening. For younger children aged 2-5 years, the dose is 4 mg once daily, also in the evening. Montelukast helps in preventing asthma symptoms and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
• Allergic Rhinitis- Montelukast is also prescribed for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis. The usual dose for adults and adolescents (15 years and older) is 10 mg once daily. For children aged 6-14 years, 5 mg once daily is recommended, and for younger children aged 2-5 years, 4 mg once daily is typical. It can be taken at any time of the day, but it’s often convenient to take it in the evening, especially when used concurrently for asthma.

In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms may include thirst, drowsiness, and stomach pain.

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule.

Take the medication orally, usually once daily in the evening, with or without food. Use as directed by a healthcare professional.

Do not use in case of:

• Hypersensitivity to montelukast or any component of the formulation.

Side effects include:

• Common side effects include headache, fever, cough, and stomach pain.
• Serious side effects are rare but may include behavior/mood changes, allergic reactions, and liver problems.

Precautions include:

• Monitor for behavioral and mood changes, especially in pediatric patients.
• Discontinue use if allergic reactions or liver problems occur.

Possible drug interaction include:

• Montelukast may interact with certain medications, including phenobarbital and rifampin. Consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
